4th Quarter 2018 Central Headlight
In the mail on November 14, 2018
A big, 48-page Fourth Quarter 2018 issue of Central Headlight will be mailed to all members in good standing on Wednesday, November 14. It is an issue not to be missed.
If you like NYC diesels sporting the cigar-band logo of the 1960s, you’ll enjoy John Springer’s recollections of his frequent teenage visits to Chatham, New York. As the son of an NYC tower operator, the “Chatham boys” welcomed John, and his affection for many of them shows through in his writing.
You’ll also enjoy reading about J. W. Swanberg’s 1967 Shark hunt in the Cincinnati area, where half of NYC’s original fleet of the stylish Baldwins were still working in transfer service. The article is splendidly illustrated by the author’s superb color photography.
Roger Hinman’s treatise on New York Central’s vast fleet of general purpose flat cars will be of great interest to freight car historians as well as to NYC modelers. Largely illustrated by builder’s photos, general service flats constructed between 1899 to 1960 are discussed. A number of in-service photos display unique loads that would make excellent modeling projects.
Did you know that the NYC owned a B-25 bomber, decked out in the reverse of the company’s passenger locomotive cigar band paint scheme? Meet the man who purchased it and flew it, Don Wetzel, more famously known for the flight of the jet-powered M-497. Learn more about the fascinating career of this NYC superstar, who, as he put it, always “had a thing for things that moved.”
